Bavaria's Fairy-Tale Castles

Ludwig’s Fairy-Tale World — Two Days in the Allgäu

King Ludwig II of Bavaria was one of the most extraordinary patrons in the history of architecture. He was driven not by representation or political power, but by an overwhelming yearning for the ideals of the Middle Ages and the Baroque splendour of the French court. Three of his four great castles lie so close together that they can be experienced on a compact two-day route — from Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau in the Allgäu to Linderhof in the Ammergau Alps.

Day 1 — Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau

Arriving early in the morning helps avoid the largest crowds. Neuschwanstein opens its doors daily; tickets must be booked online in advance. The tour leads through the Throne Room and the Singers’ Hall — chambers that never served the purpose for which they were built, as Ludwig died shortly before the castle was completed. The Marienbrücke footbridge spanning the Pöllat Gorge offers the classic photographic vantage point. In the afternoon, the descent to Hohenschwangau is well worth making: the castle, painted in vivid yellow, was Ludwig’s childhood home, and it was here that his passion for Richard Wagner was kindled — Wagner’s operas permeate the entire iconography of Neuschwanstein.

Day 2 — Linderhof, the Completed Gesamtkunstwerk

Roughly 30 kilometres to the west, Linderhof Palace lies in the Graswang valley — the only castle that Ludwig II actually completed and in which he also spent extended periods of residence. In contrast to the rugged mountain Romanticism of Neuschwanstein, Linderhof is a homage to Versailles and the absolutism of Louis XIV, towards whom Ludwig II felt an almost mystical veneration. The Hall of Mirrors, the dining room with its retractable table, and the sweeping parkland with its fountains, the Venus Grotto and the Moorish Kiosk make Linderhof the most layered of the three castles. Those with energy to spare after the visit should drive to nearby Oberammergau — renowned for its Passion Play and its painted Lüftlmalerei facades.

The route
  1. 1

    Neuschwanstein Castle

The most photographed castle in the world perches on a rocky spur above the Alpsee — the inspiration for Sleeping Beauty's castle and the very embodiment of Ludwig II's Romantic architecture.

  2. 2

    Hohenschwangau Castle

Directly opposite stands the yellow Hohenschwangau, Ludwig II's childhood residence and the setting of his Romantic dreams, which he later rendered in stone at Neuschwanstein.

  3. 3

    Linderhof Palace

In the Ammergau Alps, roughly 30 kilometres from Hohenschwangau, lies Ludwig's only fully completed palace — a homage to Versailles in miniature, surrounded by fountains and terraced gardens.
